South Campus Focuses on the Nation

On January 24th, South Campus became part of the nation-wide Focus the
Nation event. Joining thousands of schools across the country, from
K-12, as well as colleges and universities, South Campus wanted to
help students focus on the global warming crisis and find ways for
individuals, as well as institutions, both local and national, to do
something to help change the situation. This was the first event of
the Second Annual South Campus Environmental Week activities,
spearheaded by Dr. Debbie Martin and the campus environmental
committee. During this event, some 70 students, faculty, and staff
joined together in the mass media room of the BCC/South Regional
Library to listen to ideas about what individuals could do to help and
then join in discussions led by faculty and staff on topics such as
recycling, green business practices, challenges presented by driving
cars, and practical, everyday things we all could do right now. Ms.
Stephanie Strange and Dr. Yong Tao from FIU's Engineering Program
talked about the Future House they built for the engineering
competition and will be recreating in Beijing for the Summer Olympics
as well as having a permanent model on the FIU campus. Ms. Natalie
Osterhoudt also talked about what we mean we when use the term
"sustainability." Computers were also set up to allow students to do
research, check their carbon footprint, see how efficient their cars
were, and to vote on a national agenda to present to presidential and
political candidates. The video here presents the introduction and
overview of the activities and planned discussions. Join Dr. Patrick
Ellingham as he engages in his Al Gore moment.

Shouan Pan Video Bobcast

A few days a go Dr. Patrick Ellingham and I spent some time with Dr. Shouan Pan and spoke with him about his new appointment as President of Mesa Community College, his background in education, his experiences as a Chinese -American and his future plans. He is scheduled to take his new position as of the first of February 2008.
Of all the things he spoke about, I was most impressed with his story of growing up in China during the time of the Cultural Revolution, and how it affected not only his boyhood but the impact it have on his family. Many of the liberties that we as Americans take for granite Dr. Pan was not afforded while growing up. In the selected segment taken form the interview he relates some of his experiences to us.

We wish Dr. Pan well in his future adventures, and hope he will keep us in his heart as we will keep him in ours.

We had a few sounds problems but thanks to the talents of Brad Haarer of the Information Technology Department we were able to get this on the web.
